Description
An ammonia test measures ammonia levels in the blood, a toxic byproduct of protein breakdown, to check liver/kidney function or metabolic disorders, often ordered for confusion, lethargy, or jaundice, using a blood draw for analysis. High levels (hyperammonemia) suggest liver disease (hepatic encephalopathy) or urea cycle disorders. Normal ranges vary by age (adults ~15-45 µmol/L).
